Things to do around Carson City on Saturday, Sept. 15

If the work week flew by for you, then you will want to be sure to catch some of the events occurring in our area before the weekend passes you by. It's already Saturday, Sept. 15, so don't waste any more time.

Exhilaration may be calling your name from the Reno-Stead Airport, where the 55th annual STIHL National Championship Reno Air Races are just the ticket for thrill seekers. Several classes of super-fast aircraft compete for titles through Sunday.

For culture seekers, the 30th annual Dayton Valley Days, a celebration of the history and people of the Dayton Valley, begins today and runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in old town Dayton.

Even closer to home is the continuation of the Silver State Art Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fuji Park in South Carson City.

This calendar is updated throughout the day as information becomes available. Here’s what’s happening on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018:

— Daily through September, Muscle Powered is holding Membership drive to recruit new members. All new and renewing members in the month of September will be entered in a drawing to win a Gregory Hiking Day Pack.

— Muscle Powered works to make Carson City healthier for all citizens and safer and more accessible for bicycling and walking through education and advocacy, the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, and developing and maintaining recreational trails throughout the city. Muscle Powered is also responsible for organized weekly walks, hikes and bike rides, on and off road, throughout Carson City. Go here to learn more and sign up.

— Desert Pigs Dayton and Mound House Saturday cleanups, 8-10 a.m. Meet at 279 U.S. Highway 50 East.

— Third and Curry Farmer's Market, located in the parking lot between Third and Second streets along Curry in downtown Carson City. Market opens at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Live music, produce, food and craft vendors. The annual seasonal event runs every Saturday throughout the summer until Sept. 29.

— 55th annual STIHL National Championship Reno Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport, 4895 Texas Avenue in Stead (Reno 89506), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit airrace.org for more information.

The Silver State Art Festival continues Saturday with classes beginning at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and runs through the weekend at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall in Carson City. The festival features stunning artwork for sale, 40 award-winning artists, gourds, beading, basketry, woodwork, paintings, photography, raffles prizes benefiting Advocates to End Domestic Violence and much more. The Silver State Festival includes three days of classes featuring beginning and advanced instructional workshops in gourding, carving, weaving, basketry, woodburning, woodturning and much more! To sign up, contact Nevada Gourd Society or by phone at 775-301-8230 or 619-995-2475. This festival runs all weekend at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd., Carson City.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979-1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dirty Pour Acrylic Painting with Dianne Butrick at Carson City Art Gallery, 110 South Curry Street, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Functional Funky Teapots with Rich McGregor, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carson City Art Gallery and Pottery, 110 South Curry Street. Learn to transform slabs of clay into sculptural functional teapots. The class runs Saturdays for four weeks beginning Sept. 8 through Sept. 29.

Harmony on the Comstock Music Festival, 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Silver City Park, located on Second Street off SR 341. Free admission and parking; live music from six performing bands performing; as well as barbecue vendors, artists and crafters, interactive art in the park, lawn games and activities, face painting, clowns, juggling, and music workshops.

30th annual Dayton Valley Days, celebrating 100 years of the Dayton Community Center building, formerly housing the old Dayton High School. Festival begins with pancake breakfast, 7:30-10 a.m. in front of the community center, followed by the parade down Pike Street, staged on the north side of the Dayton Courthouse (Bluestone Building). Dayton Valley Days will also feature its eighth annual chili cook-off, street festival and vendor booths along Pike Street in old town Dayton, the 16th annual Gold Creek Show-N-Shine car show, as well as gold panning, a kids zone with games and a bounce house, and speeder car rides. Dayton Valley Days runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit daytonvalleydays.org for a full schedule of events.

— Fifth annual Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness 5K-10K Run-Walk, Bench Press Competition and Golf Tournament, 7 a.m. at Silver Oak Golf Course, 1251 Country Club Drive in Carson City. Golf tournament is a four-person scramble format.

Dive One 4UR School Test Drive, sponsored by Capital Ford and hosted by Carson High School. Proceeds go to support CHS band programs. Event takes place in the CHS north parking lot starting at 8 a.m.

— Muscle Powered monthly Trash Mob clean-up of Carson City Freeway Multi-Use Path south of U.S. Highway 50 and north of Fifth Street. Meet at south end of N. Lompa Lane at corner of W. Modoc Court. Closed-toed shoes or boots required. Long pants, long-sleeved shirts, hats, sunscreen and water are recommended to bring. Muscle Powered will provide gloves, pick-up sticks, and bags.

— 10th annual Great Sierra River Clean-Up, 9 a.m. to 12 noon at multiple locations around Lake Tahoe, including Chimney Beach, East Shore Zephyr Cove and Shoals, South Shore Kiva Beach, South Shore Trout Creek, South Lake Tahoe Regan Beach. Volunteer lunch celebration held at League to Save Lake Tahoe office, 2608 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe, CA.

— U-Pick organic apples at Apple Basket Orchard/Agape Organics, 7425 Franktown Road in Southern Washoe Valley, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Half-Off Pet Adoptions at the Nevada Humane Society, 549 Airport Road in Carson City, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Imaginations Children's Acrylic Abstract Painting, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Art Center, 55 N. R Street in Virginia City. Call 775-847-7774 or email aperry@stmarysartcenter.org.

— Fifth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl, 12 noon to 8 p.m. Events occurring along California Avenue Corridor in Reno. Carson City writer Ellen Hopkins will be among the featured artists headlining the event, which starts at the Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W. Liberty Street in Reno.

— Second annual Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Alzheimer's Fundraiser at Westside Pour House, 110 W. Telegraph Street in downtown Carson City, 4-7 p.m.

— Opening of the Reno Chamber Orchestra 2018-19 concert season. Features this weekend: Guest conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong conducting Mozart's Overture to La Clemenza di Tito, as well as Golijov's "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaacx the Blind, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Eroica. Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. inside Nightingale Concert Hall, located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus and runs until 9:30 p.m. Visit www.renochamberorchestra.org/concerts for more information.
